In Uttarakhand, the selection of the leader of the Congress Legislature Party has not only been suspended but the post of state president has also got stuck. Due to the division of the MLAs into two camps, an agreement could not be reached in the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party in the War Room on Gurdwara Rakabganj Road in Delhi on Monday night. A group of MLAs has also intensified the campaign to replace the state president Pritam Singh. Congress President Sonia Gandhi was authorized to take a decision on the post of Leader of Opposition by unanimously passing a resolution of the Legislature Party meeting held in the presence of state in-charge Devendra Yadav.
Sonia Gandhi can also take a decision regarding the state president. Now the decision is expected on Tuesday i.e. today. The camp within the Congress has intensified over the seat of the Leader of the Opposition, which fell vacant after the death of Dr. Indira Hridayesh on June 13. At present, the party seems to be divided between the camps of State Congress President Pritam Singh and former Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary Harish Rawat. With the exercise of selecting the Leader of the Opposition just a few months before the 2022 assembly elections, a camp in the party has intensified the campaign to change the state president. This has further complicated the issue of the selection of the Leader of the Opposition.
This group of Harish Rawat supporters is advocating the Brahmin-Thakur formula for the posts of Leader of Opposition and State President. Since there is no longer a Brahmin face in the Congress Legislature Party, there is a demand to hand over the post of state president to a Brahmin. For the last two days, the effort to choose the leader of the State Congress Legislature Party in Delhi could not reach the end even on Monday. Throughout the day, several rounds of talks were held between senior party leaders with state in-charge Devendra Yadav. Congress Legislature Party meeting was held at 8 pm on Monday night.
The meeting did not agree on the name of the Leader of the Opposition. State Congress President Pritam Singh is in favor of handing over the post of Leader of Opposition to Deputy Leader of Opposition Karan Mahara. On the other hand, the names of party MLA from Haridwar district Mamta Rakesh and senior party MLA Govind Singh Kunjwal are being carried forward. The special thing is that Karan Mahara is considered close to the Harish Rawat camp, but this camp is not supporting him in this matter.
